Why food alone is not enough?
Category: Healthy Nutrition
You might be surprised to know that many products that are marketed as "healthy" foods are filled with sugar, fat, and artificial ingredients.
One-third of our total calories come from fast food, which is lacking in good nutrition.
Food isn't what it used to be!
What might surprise you even more is that even when you try to eat right, the nutritional value of our produce isn’t what it used to be.
A 2004 U.S. study of 43 crops showed a decline in the nutrient content of up to 38% over the past 50 years.
The researchers found statistically reliable declines for six nutrients — protein, calcium, potassium, iron, and vitamins B2 and C.
Grains have also experienced a decline in nutrient composition.
A 2020 study published in Scientific Reports found that protein content in wheat decreased by 23% from 1955 to 2016, as well as significant reductions in manganese, iron, zinc, and magnesium.
Why isn't food what it used to be?
Soil depletion, changes in farming methods, the extensive use of chemical fertilizers, food processing and preparation, led to the drastic decline in essential nutrients in crops.
Clearly, we don't get as many nutrients as we need from the food that we eat.
However, supplementation can make up for the shortfalls in our diet.
